Creature or Creator of circumstances?

An important leadership trait is to have control and take ownership over decisions and circumstances. There are two types of people in this world, creatures and creators of circumstance, which one are you?

Man is not the creature of circumstances, circumstances are the creatures of men. We are free agents, and man is more powerful than matter – Benjamin Disraeli

Here is a simplified comparison between Creatures and Creators.

Creatures

Creatures of circumstances are people who sleep walk through life. They wake up everyday, complaining about their job, their appearance, their body. They basically have a victim mentality. They are easily influenced by others, even if others values are not aligned with them. They also have goals and dreams but they also let external forces influence them. When they fail they give up and complain that it’s not for them.

Creators

Leaders are creators of circumstances, they don’t let external forces to change their habits in achieving their goals. They take control over their schedule, their time, their actions, and if they fall short they don’t allow excuses such as I didn’t have the time, or it’s because of my job or its because of my family. They let their goals drive them. Leaders take ownership, they find complaining is a complete waste of time, and when they fail they look at it as a learning opportunity.

We all want to be in control, its our nature, and the key traits that differentiates creatures and creators is discipline and commitment in achieving their goals.
